Studio F5 resident @helenrawlinson will be taking her wares to Stokey Church Street this weekend to join @frenchworkwearco at their 3 day Pop Up starting tomorrow at 12 noon. As well as her screenprinted goodies Helen will be selling an exclusive batch of wash bags and purses repurposed from some oversized and neglected pieces of vintage workwear.

For this E8 Art and Craft Trail, @e8artandcrafttrail Sat 7 & Sun 8 December, @chocolate_factory_n16 artist Catherine Jacobs, @catherinejacobsartist alongside fellow Hackney-based artist Marcia Teusink @marcia_teusink present, ‘Shifting Terrains & Changing Contexts’ @stowbrothers 5 Amhurst Road, Hackney Central, just before it meets Mare Street. The artists will be in attendance this weekend 11-5 and their joint exhibition continues during office hours until 31 January 2025.

Working across photography, painting, video and objects, they explore landscape and historic plant specimens in ways that invite us to consider what happens when one’s sense of place shifts and becomes uncertain, strange and sometimes sublime.

Jacobs is intrigued by how photography is inherently an ambiguous medium. Working with experimental processes, she makes open-ended works as a focus for our subjective responses. Using a close up-lens and careful lighting, she transform sticky, domestic materials into abstract landscapes. Outside the studio, she seeks out transient and liminal spaces for the cameras lens. Inviting us into playful states of uncertainty, her work is informed by her parallel career in research psychology and coaching.

Marcia Teusink explores the historic movement of plants – a subject she began to research after learning about Hackney’s historic Loddiges Nursery several years ago. The plant business was responsible for the import and export of thousands of plant species around the globe, with great success and also some negative repercussions. Her pieces look at both the care early botanists gave to plants and the complications inherent to moving species around the world.

Posted @withregram • @curator_and_maker Introducing 🕊️ Sophie MacCarthy 🕊️  Sophie’s studio, where she has been for about 27 years, is tucked away in Hackney in an old, former chocolate factory, now artists’ studios, down a cobbled street with wrought iron stairs and walkways, packed with character. Inside, her studio is filled with inspiring books, postcards, and a music collection encompassing Bach, Philip Glass, Bob Dylan and Oscar Peterson – a glimpse of the eclectic music lover in Sophie.

Sophie is from a strong lineage of makers and artists: her grandfather Desmond MacCarthy was a journalist and literary editor and critic and part of the Bloomsbury group circle of artists and writers. On her French mother’s side Sophie’s ancestors were sculptors and painters. Initially Sophie studied ceramics at Amersham college in Buckinghamshire, then later on in the early 80s, studied sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art. On arrival we were met by a large sculpted head, one of Sophie’s earlier works from her time at Wimbledon.

The decorating technique she employs on her ceramics involves multi-layering of coloured slips in combination with paper stencils and wax-resist. There is a brevity, a hint, which she then applies with either a sponge or a brush giving a translucency, a depth of tone with all her work. She works with complete confidence, the determined colours complementing her strong eye for design.

Yay we’re in @thetimes top 24 things to see at The London Design Festival @LDF this coming weekend. online today and out in print on Friday. Together with @rude.studio and all the other amazing happenings in and around Stokey, the new kids @dalstontostokeydesigndistrict are definitely on the map!

Starting this weekend, three of our studios will be open at The Chocolate Factory N16. Come and chat to the makers, join in live workshops and see our lovely studio setting. Look out for the map as there are loads of other places to visit including our studio friends @praxis_n16

Opening 12-5pm drop in workshops are free and on a first come first served basis.

So the 30 year celebrations continue! For the weekend of Sept 14/15th, As part of the @dalstontostokeydesigndistrict, official partners of @l_d_f_official, we’re super excited to have a select group of studios at the Chocolate Factory opening their doors to the public, demonstrating their practice and offering work for sale.

Participating studios:

@joelyclinkard & @ejacksonjackson G5 – ceramics studio

Drawing as Design for Clay – Drop in workshops exploring drawing as a design tool for surface and form. Alongside ceramic work for sale.

@helenrawlinson F5 – textile design and screen printing workshops.

Helen will be giving screen print demonstrations throughout the weekend with the opportunity to design and pull your own print on to fabric (bring your own white t-shirt. Tote bags or kids t-shirts can be purchased on the day) Lampshades, tea towels, cushions and accessories will also be on sale from her pattern filled studio.

Lydia will be talking about her work and inspirations and demonstrating some of her unconventional mixed media techniques. Paintings, prints cards and more will be available to purchase throughout the weekend all taken from Lydia’s passion for landscape painting.

We’re kicking this off on 14th/15th September 12-5pm There’s going to be tons of exciting local stuff happening this and the following weekend too, including our old chums @everydaysunshineshop so be sure to look out for the map/flyers for the whole district.

Also check out studio member Sarah Hyndman of @typetasting who will be hosting a multi sensory tasting talk on 20th September as part of the festival over in Bankside.
